Hook Grip
Hook grip is a deadlift / Olympic-lifting grip in which the thumb is wrapped around the bar first, then the fingers wrap over the thumb — providing a secure hold that does not rely on grip strength.
Hook grip is mandatory for Olympic weightlifters because the snatch and clean require the bar to release at the top. In powerlifting, hook grip is the safer alternative to mixed grip (one hand supinated) for deadlifts because it avoids the biceps tear risk of the mixed-grip supinated arm.
Hook grip is initially painful — most lifters report 4-8 weeks of acclimation before it stops hurting. Tape on the thumb helps significantly during this period. Once acclimated, hook grip provides essentially unlimited grip strength on heavy pulls, often eliminating the need for straps in training.
