Periodization
Periodization is the systematic variation of training intensity, volume, and exercise selection across weeks or months to drive long-term strength adaptation.
Periodization addresses the diminishing returns of doing the same workout indefinitely. The three classic models are linear periodization (intensity rises and volume falls over weeks), undulating periodization (intensity and volume vary within the week), and conjugate (multiple qualities trained simultaneously, popularized by Westside Barbell).
Most modern intermediate-to-advanced programs use either undulating periodization (Daily Undulating Periodization, DUP) or block periodization (sequential phases focused on hypertrophy → strength → peaking). 5/3/1 is a simple form of linear periodization at the cycle level. Choice of periodization model matters less than consistency and progressive overload.
