Peaking

Peaking is a 2-4 week training block that reduces volume, raises intensity, and prepares a lifter to express their highest possible strength on a specific test or competition day.

A typical peaking block taper has 2-3 weeks of progressively lower volume and progressively higher intensity (90%+ of 1RM), followed by a deload week of 1-2 light sessions immediately before the test. The goal is to fully recover from accumulated training fatigue while preserving — or slightly enhancing — neural drive at maximal loads.

Peaking is mostly relevant to powerlifters preparing for meets and to lifters testing 1RMs intentionally. It's not necessary for everyday training; most successful intermediate programs cycle through hypertrophy and strength blocks without dedicated peaks.
